D1 Mock

In this report I will be discussing on how HMV can improve the quality of its business

information. The 3 characteristics that can be improved that is will be discussing is; Accessible,

Valid and timely. I believe these 3 characteristics can be improved in many different types of

ways and will be discussing this further on in the report.

Accessible is what I believe to be HMV's weakest characteristic, I believe this because a strong

reason into why they have a bad few years of sales and profit compared to previous years is

because of online shopping. Online shopping has taken the world by storm and is allot cheaper

than high street stores and retailers because of the much lower cost of operations. This lower

cost means that HMV's target market will opt to choose online products as they can get them

cheaper at their own convenience. HMV did try online shopping but where unsuccessful

because they stocked to much of a wide variety of product which were not selling. I believe that

to improve this characteristic HMV need to focus more on the popular demand of triple A titles

and chart music so they didn't have money and stock space consumed by needless products.

Marketing and Advertising would have to help HMV to find out what the public would want

from primary research or do secondary research of competitors to see whether or not they can

change and adapt to become better than them, This research will allow HMV to improve its

business information to set it towards building a more established online service. this online

service could also improve HMV's quality of business information because the site could feature

a feedback part much like the app they already have in existence so it is much more accessible

to look at and improve.

The second characteristic I believe that HMV could improve on for the quality of its business

information is Valid, this is because the information they receive must be Valid or else it

wouldn't work for example if HMV needed information on upsizing if they had information from

a previous year saying they could afford and budget it from the financial department then this

will not be valid information or up to date so if they went through with the upsize they may not

be able to finance it anymore. To make sure their information is valid they first need to make

sure it is fit for purpose and up to date. they can continuously update information to avoid this.


the third characteristic that HMV could improve for the quality of their information is cost-
effective, this is because in recent years HMV haven't seen the profit margin they used to be

getting so every cost effective way of improving the quality of their information is a significant

matter. HMV can save on cost by using free applications to flow data internally though the

company like E-Mail. They can also collect information through feedback and questionnaires

which are cheap to implement more often than market research is.

Summary;

In conclusion if HMV were to implement these 3 ideas then they may be able to improve the

quality of their information and save them time and money which is very import for a company

such as HMV because of its recent downfall. Also keeping their information valid and up-to-date

from constant market research and feedback will allow them to make changes on their business

plans accordingly.

HMV's business functional areas and how they flow information between them;

Sales:

These are the people that sell the product to the customer, they work with Finance as they

have to know how much money is available to spend on ordering new stock.

Manufacturing:

Produce all the products that are sold, they work with sales so they know how many more

products they need to make. they also work with finance as they need to make sure the

company can fund the demand of products.

Marketing:

Promote the business by advertising, they work with finance to know the budget. They also

work with Sales as they work on new promotions on products doing well.


finance:

Look after all the money by working out profits and who needs to be paid, work with every

other department as they are in charge of making sure every employee gets paid, they make

sure they are making profits and if not find out why and work on it.

Admin:

A range of different jobs which include job vacancies and staff training. work with finance.

Purchasing:

Have a record of what was purchased and can also see what products are doing well and what

isnt so they can relay this information to manufacturers.
